A neighbouring country has been spreading propaganda and hatching conspiracies against Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) industry in recent times, Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has said today (11 January).

"But we will not compromise our country's interests to please others," he said in his speech as the chief guest during the closing ceremony of two exhibitions held at the capital's International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).

He also mentioned the banking sector was destroyed due to corruption during the previous government's tenure.

"Various mafia groups were formed, and they will now be shaken up," he added.

Referring to issues related to Beximco, the adviser said, "One group took Tk100 crore from a bank without exporting anything. One group alone took Tk58,000 crore as loans."

The two exhibitions, held for four days, were jointly organised by the Bangladesh Garment Accessories Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) and ASK Trade Show and Exhibition Private Limited.

The exhibitions, spread across eight halls of ICCB, featured 500 companies from 25 countries and showcased the latest machinery used in the readymade garment industry.
