BGMEA advises factory closure on 25 December for Tarique's return
Also suggested discussing with workers on adjusting the leave
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has advised the temporary closure of garment factories around Dhaka Airport, Tongi and surrounding areas on 25 December, citing that the return of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman might trigger heavy public gatherings, causing disruption in workers' regular movement.
The apex body made the request to its members in a notice yesterday (22 December).
"A massive gathering is expected at the airport and surrounding areas on the occasion of Tarique Rahman's homecoming. Considering this, workers' movement and the transportation of import‑export goods from factories in Uttara [East and West], Uttarkhan, Dakshinkhan, Khilkhet, Abdullahpur, Turag, Tongi, Pubail, Rupganj, Kanchan Bridge, and the eastern part of Ashulia may be disrupted on that day," reads the notification.
BGMEA said the factory owners may consider discussing with workers taking leave on 25 December and adjusting one day of general duty either before or after the mentioned day.
According to BGMEA sources, more than 200 BGMEA member factories are in these areas.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Rezwan Selim, vice president of BGMEA, said that they have informed the factory owners to consider the matter.
He also clarified that the decision was not taken out of any fear of disgruntlement.
On 25 December, Tarique Rahman is returning from the UK after 17 years. To celebrate his return, BNP has prepared to accord him a reception in the capital's 300 feet area. A large number of leaders and activists are expected to attend the reception.
