BGMEA honoured by New York State for global industry contributions

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has received formal recognition from both the New York State Assembly and Senate for its role in promoting sustainable and ethical practices in the global apparel industry.

The honours, presented during the 4th New York International Trade Fair & Chamber Expo 2025 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square on 26 September, acknowledge the BGMEA's leadership in advancing Bangladesh's position as a leading apparel exporter, reads a press release issued yesterday (27 October).

The New York State Assembly Citation commended the BGMEA for its participation in the fair, jointly organized by the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Bangladesh–USA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BUCCI), and the New York International Trade Fair Inc.

Separately, the New York State Senate Certificate of Recognition, signed by Senator Luis R Sepúlveda of the 32nd Senate District, praised the association for its efforts to strengthen Bangladesh–US trade ties and promote sustainable business practices. BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

The fair was inaugurated by Kelly Loeffler, Administrator of the US Small Business Administration, and attended by officials including Dilip Chauhan from the New York City Mayor's Office, Mark Jaffe, President and CEO of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce, and Gloria Starr Kins, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Society & Diplomatic Review.

The BGMEA said the dual recognition represents an international acknowledgment of Bangladesh's ready-made garment sector as a benchmark for innovation and responsible manufacturing.

"This recognition marks a historic milestone for Bangladesh's apparel industry," the association said in a statement, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing as it continues to build its reputation as the world's second-largest apparel exporter.
