Govt approves purchase of 1.30 lakh tonnes fertiliser, 15,000 tonnes sugar

A government committee today (14 October) approved proposals for procuring around 1.30 lakh tonnes of fertiliser and 15,000 tonnes of sugar to meet the country's growing demand.

The approvals came from a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) held virtually with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair.

According to Cabinet Division officials, following a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce, the government will procure 15,000 tonnes of sugarcane white sugar from the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) under the local Direct Procurement Method (DPM) at a cost of about Tk173.37 crore.

The price per kilogram of sugar has been fixed at Tk115.58.

In response to two separate proposals from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will procure 40,000 tonnes of MOP fertiliser from the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) under a state-level agreement (9th lot) for around Tk174.42 crore, with each tonne costing $356.25.

The BADC will also procure another 30,000 tonnes of fertiliser from OCP, NUTRICROPS, Morocco, under a state-level agreement worth approximately Tk208.81 crore, where each tonne will cost $568.67.

Meanwhile, responding to two separate proposals from the Ministry of Industries, the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will procure 30,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser from SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company, Saudi Arabia, under the 4th lot for the current fiscal year (FY26) at a cost of Tk155.45 crore, with each tonne costing $422.66.

The BCIC will also procure another 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser from KAFCO, Bangladesh, under the 6th lot for FY26 at a cost of Tk143.48 crore, with each tonne priced at $390.75.
