Urban climate resilient infrastructure project approved at ECNEC meeting

The National Economic Council Executive Committee (ECNEC) convened yesterday, May 24, at 11:00 AM in the NEC Conference Room and concluded at approximately 12:15 PM.

Ten development projects, including the Urban Climate Resilient Infrastructure Project (UCRIP), were approved during the session. Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting, which 19 advisors and relevant government officials attended.

The Urban Climate Resilient Infrastructure Project (UCRIP) is the third phase of the "Climate Change Adapted Urban Development (CCAUD)" program, supported by the German Development Bank (KfW). The total estimated cost for implementing UCRIP is BDT 590.42 crore. The Government of Bangladesh will provide BDT 203.75 crore, while KfW will offer a grant of BDT 386.67 crore.

The project will be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) under the Local Government Division and is scheduled for completion by June 2029. The grant from KfW will improve the quality of life for Bangladesh's urban population. The development of climate-adapted urban infrastructure will enhance the capacity of city corporations and municipalities to address the challenges of climate change.
Under the CCAUD initiative, the first phase supported Barishal City Corporation and Satkhira Municipality. The second phase is currently assisting Khulna City Corporation. The third phase will see the implementation of the UCRIP project in Gaibandha Sadar Municipality, Islampur Municipality, and Sirajganj Municipality.

The project aims to identify climate risks in areas affected by climate change in the short, medium, and long term and support flood prevention measures. During the initial design and drafting phase, former LGED Project Director Md. Nazmul Hasan Chowdhury played a key role, and currently, Md. Abdul Khaleq, Project Director of the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Mainstreaming Project (CRIMP), serves as the focal person for UCRIP.
