National livestock week 2025 to begin on 26 November
National Livestock Week 2025 will be observed for the first time in Bangladesh from next Wednesday with the theme "Local breeds, modern technology: Improvement in livestock." Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar announced the details at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.
The week-long programme will run simultaneously at the central, district and upazila levels from 26 November to 2 December.
Farida Akhtar said that a series of events — including livestock medal distribution, awareness activities, rallies, discussions, seminars, workshops and exhibitions — will take place throughout the week.
According to the National Livestock Medal Policy, 15 medals will be awarded in five categories in recognition of contributions to the livestock sector. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place recipients in each category. The medals will be presented by Planning Ministry Advisor Wahiduddin Mahmud, the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus will share a video message marking the occasion.
The livestock advisor said the sector plays an important role in the country's socio-economic development. Its contribution to national GDP stands at 1.81%, with a GDP growth rate of 3.19%. The sector accounts for 16.58% of agricultural GDP, while the monetary value of livestock GDP stands at Tk91,360 crore.
She noted that the poultry industry is now the country's second-largest employment sector, with more than Tk40,000 crore in private investment. Bangladesh has 85,227 registered commercial poultry farms and around 1,91,000 marginal farms. Daily egg production has reached an average of 66.8 million, which she described as a significant success.
She added that the government has taken major steps to improve disease control. A total of 1.7 million doses of vaccine have been administered to prevent Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), zoning measures have been implemented to eradicate Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), and around 60 million doses of vaccine have been administered to control PPR in goats.
Farida Akhtar said the celebration of National Livestock Week 2025 will help accelerate the spread of modern technology, strengthen safe food production, support women and youth entrepreneurship, uphold international standards and enhance public–private collaboration. She thanked the media for raising awareness and contributing to the livestock sector's development.
