KOICA starts new phase of graduate nursing education project
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has officially launched the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) (2025–2029) for the Education and Research Capacity Building Project at the National Institute of Advanced Nursing Education and Research (NIANER) in Bangladesh.
The project aims to enhance the quality of graduate-level nursing education and strengthen research capacity in the country.
The initiative builds on the achievements of the project titled "Establishment of a Graduate School of Nursing in Bangladesh", implemented between 2012 and 2019, under which the country's first systematic institution for graduate nursing education was established. To address sustainability challenges faced by the graduate nursing programme, the current phase introduces a doctoral programme in nursing.
The second phase focuses on further improving the quality of nursing education and research, enhancing the research environment, and establishing a sustainable framework capable of independently developing skilled human resources and conducting research.
The project is being jointly implemented by Yonsei University College of Nursing, Hyundai Research Institute, and Hanaro Medical Foundation. Through this initiative, the Graduate School of Nursing in Bangladesh is expected to evolve into a self-sustaining higher education institution, serving as a central hub for training advanced nursing professionals and conducting research aligned with national health policy priorities.
The project is expected to contribute to improving the quality of Bangladesh's health workforce, strengthening the professional standing of nursing, and supporting public health promotion and the national healthcare system.
To ensure smooth implementation, a PMC delegation from KOICA visited Bangladesh and held an inception meeting with key stakeholders, including the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery, and NIANER.
During the meeting, the PMC shared the implementation framework and detailed action plans, clarified institutional roles and coordination mechanisms, and agreed on the phased implementation schedule, formally marking the official launch of the project.
