Jean Pesme takes charge as World Bank’s new director for Bangladesh, Bhutan

Jean Pesme has officially assumed duties as the new Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan at the World Bank, effective 1 July 2025.
A French national and engineer by training, Pesme brings with him extensive experience in economic development, financial sector reform, and institutional resilience. He joined the World Bank in 2003 as a Senior Infrastructure Specialist and has since served in several leadership roles across the World Bank Group, including at its private sector arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC). He has worked across regions, with a particular focus on financial systems in the Middle East and North Africa.
Before taking on this new assignment, Pesme served as the Global Director for Finance at the World Bank, leading initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable, stable, and inclusive financial systems. He also headed the Financial Stability and Integrity global team, which supports countries in building transparent and resilient financial institutions in line with international standards.
In a statement, Pesme said: "Bangladesh has unique development experiences to share with the world. This is a country that has repeatedly surprised the world with its development innovation, determination, and resilience to tackle pressing development and economic challenges. I look forward to working closely with the government and people of Bangladesh to help the country maintain a robust and inclusive development and growth trajectory."
He also highlighted plans to enhance collaboration with private sector arms such as IFC and MIGA to mobilise private investment and create quality jobs.
As Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, Pesme will lead the strategic and policy engagement with both governments, ensuring that the World Bank's country programmes are closely aligned with national development goals. He will focus on maximising impact through partnerships, speed, and scale.
The World Bank has been a key development partner of Bangladesh since its independence, having committed over $46 billion in grants and concessional financing. Bangladesh currently holds the World Bank's largest IDA portfolio, with an ongoing commitment of $15.4 billion.
