Female oncologists unite to advance breast cancer treatment in Bangladesh
As part of the global observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a special scientific workshop titled "Women in Oncology – Breast Cancer Workshop" was held on Friday at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
More than 50 female oncologists from leading medical colleges, hospitals, and research institutions across the country participated in the workshop, which was organised to promote collaboration, share research insights, and advance treatment strategies for HER2-positive breast cancer.
The event was chaired by Prof Dr Parveen Shahida Akhtar, President of the Medical Oncology Society in Bangladesh, with Dr Parveen Akhtar Banu and Prof Dr Nazrina Khatun attending as special guests.
In her address, Prof Dr Parveen Shahida Akhtar said: "HER2-positive breast cancer treatment has reached a highly advanced stage today. However, accurate diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach remain crucial. The dedication of women doctors in research, treatment, and humanitarian service continues to inspire society. I'm grateful to see this workshop being held for the third consecutive year."
Special guest Dr Parveen Akhtar Banu noted: "The contribution of women doctors in advancing cancer treatment in Bangladesh is now recognised globally. Workshops like this not only foster knowledge exchange but also strengthen cooperation and confidence among physicians."
Professor Dr Nazrina Khatun added:"Through increased awareness and timely treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer, many patients can return to healthy lives. Female oncologists are playing a vital role in this journey, which is a matter of national pride."
The workshop covered a range of topics, including modern treatment strategies for HER2-positive breast cancer, diagnostic innovations, surgical approaches, and recent advances in radiotherapy.
Speakers included Dr Bidoura Tanim, Dr Umme Salma Shabnam, Prof Dr Samia Mubin, Dr Shahida Alam, Dr Najma Azim Daisy, Dr Faria Sharmin, and Dr Rahnuma Parvin, among others.
An experience-sharing session was attended by Dr Ferdous Ara Begum, Dr Jahan Afroza Khanam Lucky, Dr Shefatuzzahan, Dr Julekha Khatun, and Dr Beauty Saha.
Sharing her experience, Dr Ferdous Ara Begum said, "The contribution and perseverance of female oncologists in advancing breast cancer care are truly inspiring."
The workshop concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to improving patient outcomes through collaborative practice and continued research.
The event was hosted by Dr Narita Khurshid and supported by Roche and Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd, who were thanked by participants for their continued encouragement of female physicians in oncology.
