Engineers urged to promote sustainability in infrastructure
A seminar titled "Sustainable Infrastructure and Strategic Planning in the Water and Power Sectors: The Role of Engineers in Future Leadership" was held at Pani Bhaban, organised by the Bangladesh Water & Power Engineers' Association (BWPEA).
Advisers Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan (Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources) and Syeda Rizwana Hasan (Ministry of Water Resources, and Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change) attended as honoured guests.
Fauzul Kabir Khan described water and power as "two pillars of national development," and added that sustainable infrastructure demands innovation, commitment and strategic vision from engineers, whose active leadership will make these sectors more dynamic.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasised that development must remain compatible with the environment, which is the essence of sustainability. She urged engineers to uphold the profession while safeguarding the environment.
Keynote papers were presented by Engineer Md Shahedul Azim Sajal, BWPEA Secretary General, and Engineer Dr Md Saif Uddin, Publicity Secretary. Chairing the session, Md Shahjahan Siraj, BWPEA President and Chief Engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, noted that sustained progress in water and power is indispensable to Bangladesh's development trajectory.
Speakers highlighted that skilled engineers help reduce project costs, accelerate implementation, and improve service quality—making fair recognition of engineers a nationally beneficial investment.
Commemorative crests were presented to the guests on behalf of the organising committee.
