City of Memories — Solo exhibition inaugurated at Alliance Française de Dhaka
Alliance Française de Dhaka has inaugurated City of Memories, a solo exhibition of miniature paintings by noted artist Kazi Salahuddin Ahmed, at its Gulshan Gallery on Tuesday, 18 November, at 11am.
The opening ceremony was attended by H.E. Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, Ambassador of France to Bangladesh, as chief guest, and Asif A Chowdhury, Honorary Consul for Chile in Bangladesh, as special guest. Art enthusiasts, cultural representatives, and members of the media were also present.
The exhibition features 140 miniature artworks reflecting Salahuddin's latest explorations. A resident of Old Dhaka, the artist draws inspiration from the city's layered history—from the Mughal era to the present—capturing its fading architecture, shared courtyards, and intimate community life. His works revisit the transformations brought by colonial influence, the memories of 1971, and the rapid modernisation replacing historic structures with steel and concrete.
Inspired by Mughal miniature traditions, Salahuddin uses delicate colour layering, architectural fragments, and transient figures to rebuild disappearing urban memories. His paintings underscore the fragility of heritage, the resilience of community, and the enduring stories embedded in Old Dhaka's evolving landscape.
Kazi Salahuddin Ahmed, who held his first exhibition in 1987, has participated in numerous group exhibitions and held around thirty solo shows across Bangladesh, France, the United States, India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia, Nepal, Iran, and the former Yugoslavia.
The exhibition will remain open to visitors until Saturday, 29 November 2025, from Monday to Saturday, 11am to 8pm, at Alliance Française de Dhaka, Gulshan (House 8, Road 7, Gulshan 1).
