China donates food aid for 45,000 rohingya refugees in Cox's bazar

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a donation from the Government of the People's Republic of China, made through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), to support Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar.
The contribution was officially marked during a handover ceremony held at the WFP Bangladesh Country Office in Dhaka.
The funding will enable WFP to procure 2,100 metric tonnes of fortified rice, pulses, and cooking oil, sufficient to provide three months of food assistance to approximately 45,000 Rohingya refugees residing in the world's largest refugee camp.
"This generous funding from China could not have come at a more critical time," said Dom Scalpelli, WFP Country Director in Bangladesh. "With humanitarian needs rising and global resources under immense pressure, this support allows us to continue delivering lifesaving food assistance to some of the world's most vulnerable people."
H.E. Dr Liu Yuyin, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, said, "This will undoubtedly play a positive role in improving the living conditions of the Rohingya people in Bangladesh and alleviating the humanitarian crisis."
Now entering its eighth year, the Rohingya refugee crisis has seen the displaced population in Bangladesh surpass one million, with a recent influx of 150,000 new arrivals placing even greater strain on already limited humanitarian resources.
WFP has warned that without new funding, food assistance will run out by October 2025. To maintain full rations for the next 12 months, the agency requires an additional US$120 million.
"We hope this contribution marks not only continued engagement but a deepening of China's role in responding to this ongoing crisis," added Scalpelli.
The contribution from China underscores the increasing significance of international partnerships in sustaining long-term humanitarian efforts and ensuring food security and dignity for displaced populations.
