Building a workplace where women thrive

In Bangladesh, more women are taking on leadership roles, breaking barriers, and shaping industries.
However, challenges like workplace bias, balancing work and personal life, and limited opportunities for career advancement persist. As International Women's Day is celebrated, organisations worldwide focus on creating environments where women succeed and rise to leadership positions.
At Daraz Bangladesh, launching the dWomen initiative in mid-2024 was a step forward in addressing these challenges. The programme empowers female employees by providing a supportive community encouraging growth, inclusion, and leadership. This initiative allows women to connect, collaborate, and support one another in their professional journeys.
One key aspect of the dWomen initiative is the "She Shines" platform, which highlights and celebrates the achievements of outstanding female employees. The platform inspires others to pursue leadership roles by recognising these individuals while creating a culture of appreciation.
However, empowerment is not only about recognition—it is about creating a supportive work environment. Daraz has improved its facilities by introducing dedicated restrooms and prayer spaces and ensuring access to sanitary products across key locations. A new female resting room also provides a space for employees to relax when needed, offering a much-needed respite during long working hours.
Ensuring safety and flexibility in the workplace is equally important. As part of the Daraz People and Organization team's initiatives for International Women's Day, the company is introducing a one-day menstrual leave per month for female colleagues. This initiative aims to support their well-being and promote a more inclusive and empathetic work environment. In collaboration with the security team, Daraz has also implemented secure early departure solutions to ensure female employees feel safe, especially when working late. Additionally, flexible work arrangements have been introduced, allowing women to balance their professional and personal responsibilities better.
Events like the recent dWomen Sports Day also play a vital role in promoting an inclusive culture. Female employees participated in various activities, from badminton matches to fun games, encouraging team building and camaraderie. These moments of connection remind everyone that success is built on collaboration and mutual support.
The company is also taking long-term steps to increase female representation in leadership roles, ensuring women have a more substantial presence in decision-making positions. Through mentorship programs, career development opportunities, and networking events, Daraz is actively working to bridge the gender gap in leadership.
These initiatives benefit the employees at Daraz and contribute to the broader corporate landscape in Bangladesh. Research shows that organisations with gender-diverse leadership teams have stronger business performance and innovation. By strengthening a culture of inclusion, Daraz is helping to set an example for others to follow.
As we observe International Women's Day, initiatives like dWomen highlight how meaningful change can start within workplaces. By prioritising equal opportunity, safety, and growth, Daraz is working toward a future where women thrive—not just as participants but as leaders, shaping the future of the corporate world.
