BUET Professor AKM Akhtar Hossain receives BAS gold medal

Professor Dr. A. K. M. Akhtar Hossain, from the Department of Physics at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has been awarded the prestigious National Professor M. Innas Ali Memorial Gold Medal-2024 by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He was honoured with this distinguished award in recognition of his significant contributions to physical science research and education.
Dr. Hossain earned his PhD from Imperial College London, UK, in 1998. His research focuses on superconductors, nanostructured ferrites, ferroelectrics, multiferroics, diluted magnetic semiconductors, optoelectronic materials, and nanocrystalline alloys. He has supervised 13 PhD, 47 MPhil, and 26 MSc theses. To date, he has published 138 full-length papers in various reputed international journals.
Professor Hossain has built an impressive publication record in scientific journals, highlighting his scholarly expertise as an emerging researcher in his field. He has achieved an outstanding total impact factor score of 421, 4,248 citations, an h-index of 36, and an i-10 index of 94. His visionary leadership and mentorship in scientific inquiry have not only enriched the field of science but also inspired a new generation of researchers to pursue knowledge and discovery.
He regularly shares his knowledge and experience through lectures at conferences, seminars, and workshops, and has been invited multiple times as a visiting professor at Osaka University in Japan. Professor Hossain has served as Head of the Department of Physics (2009–2011) and Provost of a residential hall at BUET (2014–2018). He is currently serving as Associate Dean of the Graduate Studies Faculty at BUET. He is also an esteemed Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
