Brunei High Commission hosts reception for 41st National Day

The Brunei High Commission in Dhaka hosted a grand reception to mark the 41st National Day of Brunei Darussalam, reaffirming the enduring friendship and growing strategic partnership between Brunei and Bangladesh.

In his address, Haji Haris Bin Othman, Brunei High Commissioner to Bangladesh, highlighted the deep-rooted diplomatic ties between the two nations since 1984 and praised Bangladesh's contributions to Brunei's development. He acknowledged the vital role of Bangladeshi professionals and labourers in Brunei and the economic impact of their remittances back home.

The event was attended by Dr Asif Nazrul, Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, along with senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from the private sector, educational institutions, and NGOs.

Haji Haris underscored the importance of strategic agreements that have strengthened cooperation between the two nations, particularly in labour, energy, and connectivity.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Employment and Recruitment of Bangladeshi Workers has ensured ethical recruitment and job security in Brunei. The MoU on LNG and Petroleum Supply reflects Brunei's commitment to supporting Bangladesh's energy security. The Air Services Agreement aims to enhance connectivity, trade, and tourism between the two countries.

Recent initiatives, including the 1st Joint Agriculture Working Group Meeting (3–5 February 2025) and the 1st Joint Agriculture Working Committee Meeting (13 February 2025), were highlighted as steps toward refining recruitment processes and addressing sectoral challenges.

The High Commissioner emphasised Brunei and Bangladesh's active collaboration in global and regional forums, including the ASEAN Regional Forum, Asia Cooperation Dialogue, Asia-Europe Meeting, Commonwealth, OIC, UN, and WTO. He expressed optimism for upcoming diplomatic engagements, particularly the anticipated Foreign Office Consultation in Dhaka, which will further align strategic interests.

Looking ahead, Haji Haris envisioned deeper cooperation in economic growth, cultural exchange, and innovative solutions to shared challenges. He praised initiatives like business partnerships and people-to-people connections, exemplified by the recent Tiger Club Bangladesh friendly golf tournament, as symbols of the growing bond between the two nations.

Concluding his speech, the High Commissioner expressed gratitude for the unwavering friendship between Brunei and Bangladesh, stating, "May our collaborative efforts serve as a beacon of hope and progress, inspiring each of us to strive for excellence in every endeavour. Long live the Brunei-Bangladesh friendship!"
