British Council welcomes new Deputy Director to Dhaka office

The British Council has announced the appointment of Maarya Rehman as Deputy Director in Bangladesh, marking a new chapter in its mission to strengthen educational and cultural ties between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
Maarya brings extensive leadership experience in culture, education and youth engagement across South Asia. Since joining the British Council in 2015, she has led major initiatives including the reopening of library facilities in Lahore and Karachi, drawing on her experience from the UK public library sector. She has also served as Director, Libraries and Outreach; Area Director, Punjab; and Deputy Director, Pakistan, overseeing strategic programmes in one of the region's most dynamic provinces.
In 2020, Maarya was appointed Country Director of the British Council in Sri Lanka and returned to Pakistan in 2023 as Deputy Director. She has now assumed her new role in Bangladesh, where she will oversee programmes across education, English, arts and youth, while building innovative partnerships and expanding opportunities for young people to engage globally.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Maarya said,
'Bangladesh has a vibrant cultural and educational landscape, and I am excited to work with our partners to co-create inclusive, future-focused programmes in English, education, arts and youth engagement. Our aim is to empower young people and strengthen global connections through trust and collaboration', she said.
To mark her arrival, the British Council hosted a welcome event on 14 October at its Dhaka office, attended by government representatives, sector experts, development partners, academics and social leaders. The event also served to bid farewell to David Knox, outgoing Director, Programmes, who made a significant contribution to the organisation's work in Bangladesh over the past three years.
For over seventy years, the British Council has been fostering cultural relations, education and English-language initiatives in Bangladesh—helping young people realise their potential and deepening mutual understanding between Bangladesh and the UK.
