BRAC University observes Independence and National day
BRAC University marked the 56th Independence and National Day with a series of commemorative events, paying tribute to the freedom fighters and honouring those who sacrificed their lives in 1971.
The country's armed struggle for independence began in the early hours of 26 March 1971, following a brutal crackdown on unarmed civilians by Pakistani occupation forces the previous night.
The Liberation War continued for nine months and culminated in victory on 16 December 1971.
A symbolic blackout was observed on campus in Dhaka from 10:30pm to 10:31pm on 25 March, in remembrance of the lives lost on that night in 1971.
The following morning, Vice-Chancellor Prof Syed Ferhat Anwar led faculty, students, and staff in hoisting the national flag and singing the national anthem at 8am.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Arshad Mahmood Chowdhury, Registrar Dr David Dowland, BRAC Business School Dean Prof Mohammad Mujibul Haque, School of General Education Dean Prof Samia Haque, Director of Communications Khairul Basher, and Joint Director of Student Life Tahsina Rahman were also present.
The programme concluded with a visit to the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, where participants laid a wreath in honour of the martyrs of the Liberation War.
