BEZA, Water Board sign deal for road to Maheshkhali EZ-3
The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority and the Bangladesh Water Development Board signed a memorandum of understanding today (10 March) to build a 4.15km connecting road at Maheshkhali Economic Zone-3 in Dhalghata.
The agreement was signed at the BEZA office as part of a delegated works package under the project for developing gas, power and transport infrastructure at Maheshkhali Economic Zone-3. Under the agreement, the connecting road will be built on an embankment owned by the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
The broader project, estimated to cost around Tk1,195 crore, includes the construction of an administrative building, connecting roads, a sewerage network, water supply facilities, gas connections, an indoor substation and other related structures, an effluent treatment plant, and boundary walls. As part of the same project, there are also plans to build the 4.15km connecting road over the existing embankment through delegated works.
At Maheshkhali Economic Zone-3, 570 acres have already been allocated to three investor companies: SPL Petrochemical Complex Ltd, Samuda Chemical Complex Ltd and Pacific Gas Bangladesh Ltd. In addition, 470 acres have been reserved for utility infrastructure, including gas, water and electricity connections, green areas and a service zone.
Among the companies that have received land, SPL Petrochemical Complex Ltd has already started land development, jetty construction and other infrastructure works to set up its industrial facility. The other companies are expected to begin their projects once the necessary infrastructure is developed.
Among others, BEZA Executive Members retired Major General Md Nazrul Islam, in charge of planning and development, and Saleh Ahmed, in charge of investment development, were present at the signing ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Nazrul Islam said work had already begun to transform Maheshkhali Economic Zone-3 into a modern economic zone. He said BEZA believed the zone would play a complementary role alongside the growing power hub centred on Matarbari in Maheshkhali.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on behalf of BEZA by Secretary to the Executive Board and Joint Secretary to the government Dr Julia Moin. On behalf of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, it was signed by Executive Engineer Md Nurul Islam of the Cox's Bazar Water Development Division.
