BEZA signs land lease deal with MEP group for electric goods plant in Mirsarai
The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) has signed a land lease agreement with MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park Limited to establish a modern electrical products manufacturing facility at the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ) in Mirsarai, Chattogram.
MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park Limited is a concern of MEP Group, established in 1974. The group said it has approximately 2,000 corporate clients and a distribution network of more than 1,000 outlets across the country.
MEP Group's businesses include Mohammadi Electric Wire & Multi Products (MEP) Ltd, MEP Fan Ltd, MEP Energy Saving Lamps Industries Ltd, MEP Polymer Industries Ltd, Chaklader Shipping Lines Ltd, MEP Light Industries Ltd, MEP Printing and Packaging Industries, and MEP Ago Limited, among others. The group said it markets a range of electrical and electronic products, including switch-sockets, cables (domestic, HT, and LT), compact fluorescent lamps and energy-saving lamps, LED lights, fans, and PVC pipes.
Under the plan, the company will establish an electrical products manufacturing cluster on approximately 10 acres of land at the NSEZ, with an investment of about Tk200 crore, entirely financed by local investment. The factory will produce electrical wires, switch-sockets, fans, LED lights, circuit breakers, and other electrical and electronic products. The group also said it aims to expand business in both domestic and international markets by leveraging its existing experience.
MEP said implementation work is expected to begin in April 2026, with construction scheduled for completion by December 2028. The company has set a target to start commercial production from January 2029. Once fully operational, the project is expected to create approximately 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
At the signing event, Saleh Ahmed, Additional Secretary and Executive Member (Investment Development), Beza, said investment by local industrial groups such as MEP at the NSEZ would play an important role in reducing import dependence, diversifying exports, and advancing technology-based industrialisation. He said Beza would continue to provide necessary support for industrial set-up by ensuring an investment-friendly environment, and urged the investor to expedite factory establishment.
Jahangir Alam Chaklader, Managing Director, MEP Group, said the company is preparing to set up a modern, technology-driven, and environment-friendly electrical products manufacturing facility at the NSEZ with Beza's support. He said the project would expand import-substitute production of electrical goods and contribute to exports in the future.
The lease agreement was signed on behalf of Beza by Saleh Ahmed, and on behalf of MEP Group by Shakil Alam Chaklader, Chairman of the company.
Beza said approximately 15 industrial units are already in production at the NSEZ, while about 20 more are under construction. The zone, spread across 25 kilometres along the coast, is being developed as the country's largest planned industrial hub, combining industrial facilities with urban services and amenities.
