Bank Asia agent banking marks 12 years with 75 lakh customers
Bank Asia Agent Banking marked its 12th founding anniversary by reaching a major milestone of bringing 75 lakh customers under the formal financial system, significantly expanding access to banking services across Bangladesh.
As the country's pioneer in agent banking, Bank Asia observed the anniversary through a series of programmes, including a cake-cutting ceremony, the launch of new services and campaigns, and the recognition of top-performing agents and employees for their contributions to financial inclusion.
The bank's Chairman Romo Rouf Chowdhury, along with members of the Board of Directors and management team, formally inaugurated the "Cash by Code" service and the "Remittance Surokkha" financial literacy campaign at a ceremony held on 17 January 2026 at Rangs Tower, Purana Paltan, Dhaka. Outstanding agents and employees were also honoured on the occasion.
Among others present were Vice Chairman Zakia Rouf Chowdhury; Director Romana Rouf Chowdhury; Independent Director Md Ataur Rahman, NDC; Managing Director Sohail R K Hussain; Additional Managing Director Md Sabbir Hossain; and Deputy Managing Directors Ziaul Hasan (Agent Banking and Chief Credit Officer), Arequl Arefeen, and Syed Zulkar Nayen, along with other senior officials of the bank. Agents from different districts across the country also joined the celebrations.
To mark the anniversary, Bank Asia organised an agent meet, Pitha Utsab and a cultural programme at its corporate office. Simultaneously, cake-cutting ceremonies and customer engagement activities were held at agent points nationwide, supported by social and print media campaigns.
Bank Asia launched its Agent Banking operations on 17 January 2014 with its first outlet in Bhabanipur, Sirajdikhan upazila, Munshiganj. Over the past 12 years, the service has brought 75 lakh customers into the banking system, of whom 92% are from rural areas and 64% are women, highlighting the bank's focus on inclusive growth and sustainable financial empowerment.
