Bangladesh proposes four priorities for global AI governance
Bangladesh has urged the global community to prioritise safety, equity, adaptability and international cooperation in artificial intelligence governance, with an emphasis on technology transfer and equitable access for developing countries.
Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faqir Mahbub Anam outlined these priorities while representing Bangladesh at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai, China.
The meeting took place as part of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2026, running from 17 to 20 July under the theme "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future".
The minister said Bangladesh is working to establish a modern and responsible AI governance framework grounded in human rights, ethics and inclusive development.
He added that the government is updating the country's digital policies and legal framework to harness the potential of AI for public benefit, while addressing associated risks.
According to the minister, under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the government is formulating an integrated and inclusive national AI policy.
Other initiatives include strengthening personal data protection and cybersecurity, preparing guidelines for the use of AI in the public sector, establishing responsible data management standards and incorporating AI-based education into academic curricula.
The government also plans to set up decentralised AI centres of excellence in regions across the country.
Faqir Mahbub Anam emphasised that international cooperation is essential to ensure technology transfer, capacity building, data sovereignty and equitable access to emerging technologies, especially for developing countries.
He added that the future of AI should not be defined solely by technological advancement, but must also reflect human values, justice and inclusivity.
The high-level meeting featured discussions on leveraging AI to accelerate sustainable development, strengthen collective security, promote inclusive growth and improve global governance mechanisms.
Government leaders, ministers, representatives of international organisations, industry executives and academics from various countries attended the conference and exchanged views on AI development, ethical governance and international cooperation.
