Bangladesh HC in London celebrates 55th National and Independence Day

The Bangladesh High Commission in London commemorated the 55th National and Independence Day with a grand reception at a city Hotel on 4 April 2025.

The event was distinguished by the presence of Catherine West MP, UK Minister for Indo-Pacific, Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), as the Guest of Honour.
Other distinguished guests included Arsenio Domingues from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Commonwealth Secretary-General, British-Bangladeshi MP and Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Housing, Communities and Local Government) Rushanara Ali, along with Ambassadors, high commissioners, diplomats based in the United Kingdom, government officials, and dignitaries from the British Bangladeshi community. The presence of a good number of veteran freedom fighters of Bangladesh dignified the reception. A good number of mainstream journalists were also present.

In her speech, High Commissioner Abida Islam paid rich tribute to the sacrifices of the 1971 freedom fighters, whose courage continues to define Bangladesh today. She also acknowledged the historic student-led uprising of 2024, which serves as a powerful testament to the nation's unwavering commitment to democracy.

High Commissioner Islam highlighted Bangladesh's significant progress, its efforts in peacebuilding, and political transformation under the interim government. She emphasised strengthening the Bangladesh-UK partnership, particularly in trade, climate action, sustainable development, culture, and education. She also called on the UK and international community to intensify efforts for the safe repatriation of 1.2 million Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Minister Catherine West MP, the Guest of Honour, reflected on her recent visit to Bangladesh, where she had meaningful discussions to strengthen bilateral ties. She highlighted key areas of collaboration, including youth employment, entrepreneurship, climate resilience, and the critical issue of Rohingya repatriation. Minister West reaffirmed the UK Government's ongoing support for Bangladesh's political transition under the interim government, stressing the importance of addressing humanitarian needs and long-term development challenges. She underscored the shared vision for both nations' prosperous and sustainable future.

The evening also featured a patriotic song by renowned Bangladeshi singer Fahmida Nabi, celebrating Bangladesh's rich cultural heritage. A documentary screening showcased the country's remarkable progress and potential. The event concluded with a delightful Bangladeshi culinary experience, offering guests an authentic taste of the country's gastronomic excellence.
