BAEC holds seminar on advances in nuclear medicine

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) organised a scientific seminar titled "Advances in Nuclear Medicine in Bangladesh: A Journey of More than Four Decades" at its headquarters' Dr Anwar Hossain Auditorium on Thursday.
Md Anwar Hossain, Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, attended the event as the chief guest, while Dr Md Mojibur Rahman, Chairman of BAEC, presided over the session. Prominent scientists, physicians, academics, and policymakers were also present.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr Debashish Pal, Member (Physical Science) of BAEC.
In his remarks, Chairman Dr Mojibur Rahman expressed gratitude to all involved in successfully organising the seminar. He praised the science-oriented outlook of the secretary and raised several issues faced by scientists, urging for their early resolution.
He sought the ministry's support in implementing essential development projects, increasing manpower, establishing a high-power research reactor, and easing complexities in importing radioactive raw materials to ensure further advancement of the commission's institutions.
In his address, the science and technology secretary expressed concern over the rising incidence of cancer and called for the expansion of BAEC's research and service activities.
He assured the ministry's positive stance in this regard and emphasised the need for BAEC to submit specific plans to overcome existing limitations.
The technical session featured four scientific papers on the history of nuclear medicine in Bangladesh, current diagnostic and treatment methods, the role of radioisotopes, and BAEC's future plans in the field.
The event concluded with a lively open discussion joined by a panel of experts.
