AIUB hosts 10th Jessup Moot Court Bangladesh Round
The 10th Bangladesh Qualifying Round of the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2026 was held at American International University–Bangladesh over three days, from 22–24 January, 2026.
The competition was inaugurated on Thursday, 22 January, with Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, former chief justice of Bangladesh, attending the opening ceremony as the chief guest. Special guests at the inauguration included Professor Dr Saiful Islam, vice-chancellor of AIUB; Professor Dr Md Abdur Rahman, pro-vice-chancellor of AIUB; and Barrister Nihad Kabir, senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
The closing ceremony was attended by Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Zafar Ahmed of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, eminent jurist and senior advocate Probir Neogi, and Professor Dr Carmen Zita Lamagna, former vice-chancellor of AIUB and member of the board of trustees.
In this year's national round, Eastern University emerged as champion, while the University of Dhaka finished as runner-up. The Best Oralist award was won by Muntahar Ahmed Thakur.
The Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious mooting competitions for law students. The Bangladesh Qualifying Round is currently recognised as the third-largest qualifying round globally and the second-largest in South Asia.
This year, 192 participants from 48 universities across the country took part in the competition, reflecting the growing strength and potential of legal education in Bangladesh.
The 2026 Bangladesh Qualifying Round was jointly organised under the patronage of American International University–Bangladesh, the International Law Students Association and Hearth Bangladesh. The event was also attended by deans, faculty members, officials and students of AIUB, along with participants from universities nationwide.
