Excise duty exemption threshold on bank deposits raised to Tk4 lakh
The initiative aims to provide financial relief to small depositors and promote wider financial inclusion across the country
Small savers are set to get relief as the government has proposed to raise the excise duty exemption threshold on bank deposits from Tk3 lakh to Tk4 lakh for the upcoming fiscal year.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury made the proposal while placing the National Budget for FY2026-27 in Parliament today (11 June).
The initiative aims to provide financial relief to small depositors and promote wider financial inclusion across the country, according to the budget speech.
Under the current fiscal framework, small savers are exempt from paying excise duty on bank deposits up to Tk3 lakh. Account holders with balances ranging between Tk3 lakh and Tk5 lakh are currently subjected to an annual excise duty of Tk150.
With the newly proposed exemption ceiling, small depositors who maintain a year-end bank balance of up to Tk4 lakh will no longer have to pay any excise duty, saving them Tk150 annually.
In his budget presentation, the finance minister also proposed structural modifications regarding the implementation and imposition of excise duties on loan-related bank accounts.
