400 electric buses to join Dhaka’s public transport network
This initiative is part of a broader effort to make the capital city’s transportation system more sustainable, safer, and environmentally friendly

The government is going to introduce 400 electric buses into Dhaka's public transportation network to modernise the capital city's transport infrastructure.
Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed made the announcement today (2 June) during his presentation of the proposed national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to make the capital city's transportation system more sustainable, safer, and environmentally friendly.
The adviser also said that the government is formulating a new policy to regulate the growing number of electric three-wheelers to ensure discipline and safety in their operation.
"To enhance coordination and governance in Dhaka's complex transport system, the government plans to restructure the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) by amending the 2012 DTCA Act and issuing the Bangladesh Urban Transport Authority Ordinance," he added.
Salehuddin Ahmed said that the "Highway Master Plan 2040," being developed with support from the Asian Development Bank, is nearing completion. It will serve as a strategic roadmap for the long-term development of the country's highway network.
On the railway front, the finance adviser acknowledged that Bangladesh still lags behind global standards in rail transport, despite its known advantages in safety, comfort, and cost-efficiency.
To address this, under the 30-year Railway Master Plan, the government has begun implementing projects such as the construction of double-line railway tracks, unify rail gauges, introduce modern signaling systems, improve rail connectivity with seaports, deploy upgraded locomotives, and implement electric traction systems.
"These initiatives represent a fundamental shift in how we envision transportation—cleaner, safer, and more efficient," said Salehuddin Ahmed.
The proposed reforms indicate a commitment from the government to modernise the country's transport infrastructure and lay the groundwork for a more sustainable urban future.
