BKMEA leader cautions on conditions of US tariff agreement, sees long-term export potential

Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, executive president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), echoed the optimism shared by other industry leaders regarding the recent reduction in US tariffs. However, he emphasized the importance of examining the fine print of the agreement.
Speaking to The Business Standard, he said, "We need to know what specific conditions have been included in the agreement—whether any tough requirements have been introduced. For example, we must consider if any value addition requirements or other obligations have been imposed that might be difficult for us to meet."
He stressed that a complete assessment of the potential impact can only be made once these details are clarified.
"However," he added, "if there are no special compliance conditions or restrictive clauses, then under the current circumstances, this move could have a positive long-term impact on Bangladesh's apparel exports."
