Directors must continue work despite outside pressure: BB governor
The governor said he would handle external pressure at his level
Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman yesterday (1 March) said directors must continue their work even if there is pressure from outside.
He made the remarks at a meeting with directors of all departments at the central bank's headquarters in Dhaka. Several senior officials present at the meeting confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
This was the governor's first meeting with directors since taking office. According to officials, he assured them that they would be able to work independently and that there would be no interference in their duties.
"Outside pressure may arise, but directors will have to work within that reality," a senior official said, referring to the governor's remarks.
The governor also told the meeting that he would handle any external pressure so that directors could carry out their responsibilities, the official added.
Another official said the governor noted that 166 directors are currently serving at the central bank.
"If we combine their experience, it would exceed a thousand years," the official said, citing the governor.
He said the governor also stressed that by properly utilising the directors' experience, there would be no need for outside recruitment.
A senior official further said the governor emphasised the need to create new employment and focus on increasing growth despite ongoing economic challenges.
The governor also asked relevant departments to examine whether interest rates could be reduced and to take a decision based on their assessment, the official said.
