Cyclone Amphan has caused damage to mangoes worth around Tk100 crore in Satkhira and Jashore, according to the mango traders of the regions.

The mango farmers, who came to Baguri Beltola Bazar adjacent to the border area of Jashore and Satkhira to sell the mangos fallen off the trees due to the cyclone, said mangoes worth around Tk100 crore had been damaged due to the Amphan.

Al Ujayer Suzan, a trader of Baguri Beltola Bazar, said, "As per I know, the wholesale traders of mangoes in Jashore and Satkhira have incurred a loss of around Tk100 crore."

Per maund of the fallen mangoes are being sold at Tk50-Tk250 according to the quality and varieties of the mangoes in the Bazar.

Himsagar mangoes were sold at Tk3,500 per maund last year. But now the mangoes are being sold at Tk250 per maund. Amrapali is now being sold at Tk50 per maund there.

Samsur Rahman, a mango trader of Satkhira, said he faced a loss of Tk7 lakh. Despite the sharp fall in the prices of mangoes, he had not got any buyer to sell two maunds of mangoes at Tk200 per maund.

Azizul Haque, a mango farmer of Jashore, has faced a loss of more than Tk10 lakh. He purchased four mango orchards at Tk7 lakh. Almost all the mangoes of the four orchards had fallen off the trees when the cyclone hit the region, said Azizul. "Now if the government gives any incentive, I would be able to recover the loss," he added.
