Lack of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and Covid-19 patients' admitting into the hospital at the last moment are causing more deaths in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

RMCH Director Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani said, "The hospital has only 18 ICU beds whereas we get 70-80 applications every day."

"Those who are not getting ICU are being treated with high flow nasal canola," he added.

Dr Chinmay Kanti Das, former public health specialist of Rajshahi Medical College (RMC), said, "Most of the patients are dying because they are getting admitted after their lungs are severely damaged. If they could detect coronavirus earlier, fewer people would die. These are unawareness."

"That's why we are suggesting everyone to test fever, cold-cough to know whether they are affected and get treatment likewise," he added.

15 more people have died in the last 24 hours in RMCH's Covid-19 ward. Among them eight are from Rajshahi, six are from Chapainababganj and one is from Natore.

"297 patients have been admitted against 271 beds. Arrangements of beds have been made on the floor of the wards," said Shamim Yazdani.

"Though they cannot be given central oxygen it is not causing a problem as they are being provided oxygen with an oxygen concentrator," he added.

143 people have been tested positive for coronavirus out of 366 samples tested in the last 24 hours in Rajshahi. The infection rate is 39.07%.

A full lockdown has been imposed in Rajshahi City Corporation area from 5 pm on 11 June to 17 June midnight to curb the spread of Covid-19.

During the restriction period, all forms of public transports including CNG-run auto-rickshaws will be barred from operating.

Besides, all kinds of shops except pharmaceutical stores will remain closed.

Rajshahi district administration has also cancelled all trains to and from Dhaka slated within the 7 days.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique said, "Additional police has been appointed beside police of 12 stations of the metropolis who will ensure that no one goes out or gets inside the city."
