Covid-19 cases rapidly cross 20,000 in Rangpur division
Since the beginning, a total of 1,38,017 collected samples were tested till Friday, and of them, 20,078 were found Covid-19 positive with an average infection rate of 14.55 percent
The number of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases has rapidly crossed the 20,000-mark in the division where the infection rate continues rising hastily amid declining recovery rate in recent weeks.
Health officials said the number of Covid-19 cases rose to 20,078 as 94 more patients were reported after testing 392 samples with an infection rate of 23.98 percent on Friday in the division.
"The infection rate crossed the 10 percent mark on March 24 for the first time since December 26 last and continued rising further from May last," Focal Person of Covid-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr ZA Siddiqui said.
Earlier, the daily infection rates were 26.04 percent on Thursday, 31.25 percent on Wednesday, 32.03 percent on Tuesday, 28.79 percent on Monday and 23.98 percent on Sunday last in the division.
"The district-wise break up of total 20,078 patients currently stands at 5,203 in Rangpur, 855 in Panchagarh, 1,611 in Nilphamari, 1,167 in Lalmonirhat, 1,299 in Kurigram, 1,915 in Thakurgaon, 6,226 in Dinajpur and 1,802 in Gaibandha of the division," he said.

Meanwhile, the total number of healed Covid-19 patients reached 18,270 with recovery of 30 more infected patients on Friday in the division where the average recovery rate currently stands at 91 percent.

"The average recovery rate of Covid-19 infected patients was 97.55 percent three months ago on March 9 last in the division where it dropped by 6.55 percent to 91 percent during the last three months," Dr Siddiqui said.
The 18,270 recovered patients include 4,748 of Rangpur, 819 of Panchagarh, 1,539 of Nilphamari, 1,061 of Lalmonirhat, 1,144 of Kurigram, 1,596 of Thakurgaon, 5,629 of Dinajpur and 1,734 of Gaibandha districts in the division.
Talking to BSS, Acting Divisional Director (Health) Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam said the Covid-19 infection-related death toll reached 429 as two more patients died in Thakurgaon on Friday in Rangpur division.
"Some 119 patients died from April 10 to June 11, the highest number of deaths in two months since the outbreak of the pandemic beginning in the division," said Dr. Siddiqui.
The district-wise break up of the 429 fatalities stands at 103 in Rangpur, 153 in Dinajpur, 52 in Thakurgaon, 37 in Nilphamari, 24 in Kurigram, 20 in Panchagarh, 23 in Gaibandha and 18 in Lalmonirhat districts of the division.
"The average casualty rate currently stands at 2.14 percent, which is the highest average fatality rate since the beginning of the pandemic in the division," Dr Islam said.
Among the 20,078 patients, 135 are undergoing treatments at isolation units, including 21 at general beds, four critical patients at ICU beds and five at High Dependency Unit beds, after recovery of 18,270 patients and 386 deaths while 1,317 are remaining in home isolation.
"Meanwhile, the number of citizens who got the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine remained steady at 5,96,943 since April 26 last, and among them, 3,87,650 got the second dose of the jab till Thursday in the division," Dr Islam added.
Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnobi Lyzu stressed abiding by the health directives by all to contain the rising Covid-19 infection.
