City Bank MD tested positive for Covid-19

The managing director said he gave his sample on Saturday and had been in self-isolation since then. He received his test report on Sunday.

Mashrur Arefin, the Managing Director and CEO of the City Bank Ltd, has been tested positive for the novel coronavirus. 

The CEO himself confirmed the news on Sunday night and said he was undergoing treatment at home.    

"I had been feeling unwell for the last couple of days. The temperature was fluctuating between101 to 102 and I had cough," he told The Business Standard on Sunday night about his symptoms.

The managing director said he gave his sample on Saturday and had been in self-isolation since then. He received his test report on Sunday.

He said, "My mother has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital for five days. I went to visit her. I think I somehow got infected there."    

"Other family members are doing good except me," he said, adding he was feeling too weak. 

Previously, Poet Abdul Hye in a facebook post revealed the test result of City Bank CEO. "Poet and Litterateur Mashrur Arefin came positive with coronavirus. Pray for his quick recovery," wrote Hye on his facebook post.       

Mashrur joined the City Bank as the Retail Banking chief in 2007. He also served the bank as its chief communications officer and chief operating officer.

He is currently a director of the bank's subsidiary remittance company in Malaysia and its merchant bank subsidiary as well.

An ex-student of Barishal Cadet College, he has an MA from Dhaka University and an MBA from Victoria University, Australia. He completed higher management courses in INSEAD, France.

Besides banking, he is known as a writer too. His translation titled 'Complete Stories of Franz Kafka' won the 'BRAC-Samakal Literary Award' and was adjudged the year's 'Best Publication' by Bangla Academy. His translation of Homer's epic 'The Iliad' was also well received by readers and academics.

Three officials of City Bank died from the deadly virus so far. Of them, the human resource department chief of the bank Mujtaba Shahriar died on April 26 while undergoing treatment at Mugda General Hospital.     

On May 12, the bank's principal brunch Central Clearing Department Assistant Vice-President Abu Sayed died at Kurmitola General Hospital. Besides, sources said another official of the bank died while undergoing treatment.
