Brac opens community centre to solve Rohingyas’ social problems

Brack has launched a community centre with a view to solving social problems of Rohingya refugees at Kutu Palong in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar district.      

Kazi Shamim, camp-in-charge, inaugurated it at No. 18 Camp on Monday, reads a press release.  

Community-Based Protection (CBP) steps would be taken so that Rohingyas can protect themselves and solve their own social problems themselves through the centre.

Brac, one of the largest NGOs in the world, constructed the centre supported by the United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR).

Protection Officer of Community Based Unit of UNHCR Takashi Mori; Programme Head of HCMP of Brac Roberts Sila Muthini; Team Lead of CBP Sharmin Akhter; Deputy Project Managers of CBP of the HCMP Borhan Mahmud, Imran Azad and Tahmina Sultana were present on the occasion.       

Kazi Shamim, in his speech, called for achieving the objective for which the centre was established.

He assured of providing necessary support to Brac, which is responsible for running the activities of the centre, on behalf of the government in this regard.     

Kazi Shamim stressed the need on further involvement of community leaders of Rohingyas for solving the problems being faced by the community. 

The centre will perform four roles such as community centre, information service, community group and community outreach member.

Brac earlier constructed such 10 community-based centres in Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas from 2017 to 2020.

About 53,498 people received services from those centres till 2020 through an awareness programme on Radio and construction of audio-visual and recreation centres.

Besides, 45,133 people were provided with information service. About 1500 volunteers are working at the moment to improve the conditions of Rohingyas.
