The missing youth has been identified as Hafez Mehrab Hossain, 18, son of Monzur Alam from the Morichya Bazar area of Haldia Palong union in Ukhiya upazila, Cox’s Bazar

A youth went missing after being swept away by a strong current while visiting a waterfall in the hilly area of Ghumdhum union in Bandarban's Naikhongchhari upazila yesterday (17 June) afternoon.
The missing youth has been identified as Hafez Mehrab Hossain, 18, son of Monzur Alam from the Morichya Bazar area of Haldia Palong union in Ukhiya upazila, Cox's Bazar.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masrurul Haque said Mehrab was part of an 18-member group visiting the Fatrazhiri waterfall near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
"While returning, sudden bad weather triggered a flash flood, causing the canal's water level to rise rapidly. As the group was crossing, Mehrab fell into the water. The strong current swept him away within moments," the OC said.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), fire service personnel, and locals have launched a joint rescue operation, he added.
Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury said the youth from Ukhiya was swept away around 4pm on Tuesday and remains missing despite ongoing rescue efforts.
