Workers’ protest halts new season start at Kushtia BAT factory
The protesting workers warned that BAT officials would be held fully accountable for any unwanted incidents arising from their demonstration

A continuous sit-in protest by seasonal workers has prevented the Kushtia Leaf Factory, a multinational tobacco processing plant under British American Tobacco (BAT), from commencing its new season (tobacco processing) for the scheduled start date of 24 April.
The workers have been staging the demonstration for two consecutive days in front of the factory, citing non-compliance with government directives and the company's failure to address their 22-point demands.
The seasonal workers initiated their sit-in today from 5am to 5pm in front of the British American Tobacco Kushtia Leaf Factory, located near the Chaudhary intersection.
They have declared their intention to continue until midnight.
The workers vowed to continue the programme indefinitely if their 22 demands remain unmet.
The workers explained that their action stems from a letter issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on 17 April. Signed by Deputy Secretary Nilufa Yasmin, the letter directed the Plant Manager of BAT's GLT Plant to take legal action regarding the workers' demands within three working days, which concluded on 22 April.
However, the workers alleged that the factory disregarded these government instructions and proceeded with preparations to begin the season using contract workers, excluding the seasonal workforce.
Consequently, the scheduled start of the season has been indefinitely postponed due to the ongoing sit-in.
The protesting workers warned that BAT officials would be held fully accountable for any unwanted incidents arising from their demonstration.
Attempts to reach trade union leaders via mobile phone for comment were unsuccessful.
As of filing of this report, no representatives from the company or the trade union have addressed the protesting workers.
In response to inquiries about the workers' movement, a BAT Bangladesh spokesperson issued a written statement affirming the company's commitment to adhering to all applicable laws and regulations.
