'Won't be in AL politics till I die,' says Kamal Mojumder in court
He alleges prison authorities not providing him digital Quran or diabetes monitoring device
Former state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Mojumder while standing in court today said he was resigning from the Awami League and will not be involved with the party's politics anymore.
"Until I die, I will not be involved in Awami League's politics," said the former Dhaka-15 lawmaker while standing in the dock.
"I hold no posts in Awami League. I'm resigning from my member post as well," he said as he was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka to have him shown arrested in a murder case filed at Kafrul police station, according to media reports.
"I seek justice," a teary-eyed Kamal pleaded to the judge.
He added, "I am 76 years old and a diabetes patient. I have lost 70% of my vision….. My humble request to you [the judge], give me justice. I am being oppressed with one case after another.
"At this age, I should be playing with my grandchildren, but instead, I am being tortured in prison. I have no one to turn to except Allah. The prison authorities are not providing me with a digital Quran or a diabetes monitoring device. I request access to these essentials," he said.
After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra accepted the petition to show six people, including Kamal, arrested in the case over a murder that occurred amid protests during last year's anti-discrimination movement in Kafrul.
The other accused include Salman F Rahman, former adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former law minister Anisul Huq, former food minister Qamrul Islam, and former inspectors general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and AKM Shahidul Haque.
As he was being escorted out of the dock, Kamal Mojumder addressed journalists, reiterating, "I am retiring from politics entirely. I have relinquished even my primary membership in the Awami League. At 76, politics is no longer for me. It is time for new leadership to emerge."
Afterwards, he and the other accused were taken into custody at the court's lockup.
Kamal Mojumder was initially arrested on the night of 19 October last year from a residence in Dhaka's Gulshan. Since then, he has been shown arrested in several murder and attempted murder cases.
