The Bangladesh Women Sports Federation (BWSF) organised a sports initiative titled 'Khelar Daak' (The Call to Play) at the Riya Gop Women's Sports Complex in the capital's Dhanmondi today (23 January), bringing together 200 children to promote gender equality, inclusion and mutual respect through sports.
The programme, held under the overall supervision of 'Khelbei Bangladesh', saw boys and girls participate side by side in a range of sporting activities, reads a press release.
Special emphasis was placed on girls' participation, addressing the limited access to sports opportunities faced by many girls in Bangladesh and creating a safe, supportive and encouraging environment for their engagement.
The event began with a mind and body session titled 'Sustho Nishash' (Healthy Breath), focusing on breathing techniques and physical exercises aimed at improving physical ability, mental wellbeing and self-confidence.
Under the guidance of certified coaches, participants took part in football, cricket, badminton, golf, tennis, table tennis, archery, basketball and boxing, with many children experiencing organised sports for the first time.
Medals were awarded to all participants at the conclusion of the programme.
Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla, president of the Bangladesh Women Sports Federation, said the initiative seeks to instil values of equality from an early age, adding that 'Khelar Daak' is an effort to build a future where both play and opportunity are accessible to all.
