Woman's charred body found in locked Gazipur room; husband among 2 detained by police
The deceased was Farzana Akter, 18, the daughter of Ayub Ali of the Mirpur Bihari Palli area in Dhaka
Police recovered the burnt body of a woman from a locked room in the Konabari area of Gazipur city yesterday evening (22 May), detaining two individuals including her husband in connection with the incident.
The deceased was Farzana Akter, 18, the daughter of Ayub Ali of the Mirpur Bihari Palli area in Dhaka.
The incident occurred at a tin-shed colony in the New Market area under the jurisdiction of Konabari Police Station.
Police later detained the victim's husband, Md Babu, 35, and the caretaker of the house, Roman, 27, for questioning.
Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Iftekhar Hossain said police recovered the charred body of the woman after receiving information about the incident.
The OC added that the body will be sent to a hospital morgue for an autopsy.
"An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, and legal proceedings are in process," he said.
According to police and locals, residents noticed a burning smell coming from Babu's rented room in a house owned by one Raju yesterday.
The room was found locked from the outside, prompting suspicion among locals, leading them to cut through the tin wall and enter the room, where they found Farzana's burnt body lying on the floor.
After being informed through the national emergency service hotline 999, Konabari police went to the scene and recovered the body.
Babu claimed that his wife had been involved in an extramarital relationship with the house caretaker, Roman.
"I locked my wife inside the room and went to Konabari Bazar in the evening. A short while later, I received news that she had died after being burned," he said.
Locals suspect that a family dispute or an issue related to an alleged extramarital affair may have been behind the death.
Police also recovered a bottle containing kerosene from the scene.
