Will contest Dhaka South city polls for mayoral post: State Minister Ishraque
“Will participate in city election from Dhaka South Inshaallah,” Ishraque made the announcement through a post on his verified Facebook page.
Ishraque Hossain, the state minister for Liberation War affairs, has announced that he will contest the Dhaka South City Corporation polls for the mayoral position.
"Will participate in the city election from Dhaka South, Inshaallah," he made it public through a post on his verified Facebook page today (23 February).
His remarks come nearly a year after the Election Tribunal declared the results of the 2020 DSCC polls void and announced Ishraque as the valid winner.
On 27 March last year, the tribunal also cancelled the Awami League government's gazette that had named Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh as mayor and ordered the Election Commission to issue a fresh gazette declaring Ishraque as mayor within 10 days.
Despite the tribunal order, Ishraque failed to take the oath or assume the legal powers of the mayor, as his gazette notification and DSCC tenure had expired.
Enraged by this, his supporters staged protests and blocked all offices inside the Nagar Bhaban.
In June, the Interim government's LGED Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said there was no legal scope for Ishraque to be sworn in as mayor since the tenure of the city corporation had already ended. The government was likely to reach a swift decision regarding this, he added.
However, after a few days, Ishraque's supporters reopened the offices as he had gone back from his mayoral oath fight.
In the 13th parliamentary election, Ishraque secured Dhaka-6 and later became a cabinet member.
