Water levels in 6 rivers of Barisal Division rise above danger mark
Officials say it is common for water levels to rise in the southern rivers during the monsoon season

Water levels in six major rivers of the Barisal Division have surged above the danger mark due to a low-pressure that has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas.
As a result, several low-lying areas in the coastal region have been inundated, said Tazul Islam, sub-assistant engineer of the Water Development Board's Hydrography Department in Barisal.
Water levels at six out of 12 key monitoring points across important rivers in the division are flowing above the danger level, while the others are nearing it, he added.
The water of the Bishkhali River is flowing above 3 centimeters at the Barguna Sadar upazila point, 17 centimeters at the Patharghata upazila point, 1 centimeter at the Betagi Upazila point, 67 centimeters at the Tajumuddin upazila point of the Meghna River in Bhola district, 13 centimeters of the Baleshwar River in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila, and 3 centimeters of the Kancha River at the Umedpur point.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Tentulia River in the Bhola Kheyaghat area, the Kirtankhola in Barisal, the Payra in the Mirzaganj upazila point of Patuakhali, and the Burishwar River in the Amtoli upazila point of Barguna are also rising.
Tazul noted that it is common for water levels to rise in the southern rivers during the monsoon season. He expressed hope that the situation would return to normal within a few days.
However, he warned of potential damage to embankments, fish enclosures, and crop lands due to the ongoing rise in water levels.
