A variety of carp (Rui, Katla, Mrigel, Kalibau) began to release eggs at various points of Chattogram's Halda river on Tuesday night, indicating spawning is about to begin in full swing.

Around 50 – 200 grams of eggs were collected from different areas of Raozan and Hathazari Upazila in Chattogram on Tuesday night.

"There was a dry thunderstorm on Monday evening for about 30 minutes and the broodfish have already started to release eggs," said Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Muhammad Ruhul Amin.

Fish in the Halda wait for a particular time in the monsoon season for more rain and thunder to release their eggs, and locals gathering these eggs hope to see full spawning on Wednesday night, as more mother fish are now there in the river.

Dr Md Manzoorul Kibria, a Halda researcher and professor at the Department of Zoology of the University of Chittagong, said, " The fish began releasing eggs on Tuesday night and we are now currently monitoring the river, waiting for the full spawning."

River researchers and local administration believe the river is more secure this year and is far better than it has been in the last 20 years. They hope this will help significantly increase egg collection.
