US trade delegation to visit Dhaka to boost trade, investment ties
Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch to lead 5–7 May visit focused on market access, investment barriers and bilateral agreement implementation
A delegation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), led by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch, is set to visit Dhaka from 5–7 May to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties.
According to a press release issued today (4 May), attributed to US Mission Spokesperson Poornima Rai, the visit will focus on advancing cooperation under the proposed US–Bangladesh Agreement on Reciprocal Trade.
Sources at the Ministry of Commerce said a 10-member US delegation led by Brendan Lynch is scheduled to meet Commerce Minister Khandker Abdul Muktadir at the Secretariat on the morning of 5 May.
The United States said it is looking forward to working with Bangladesh on implementing the agreement, which aims to enhance economic growth in both countries by improving market access, removing barriers to investment and expanding commercial opportunities, reads the release.
Three days before the national parliamentary election on 9 February, the interim government signed a reciprocal trade agreement (Agreement on Reciprocal Trade-ART) with the United States.
The agreement includes several initiatives aimed at reducing the trade deficit between the two countries. Under the deal, Bangladesh is required to comply with 131 conditions, while the United States has to meet only six.
