US marks Independence Day reiterating support for reform in Bangladesh

The US Embassy in Dhaka reiterated its government's strong support for the ongoing reform initiatives led by the interim government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Prof Yunus ahead of its Independence Day celebration today.
Speaking at an event organised in Dhaka on Wednesday, US Chargé d'Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those involved in the student-led popular uprising of July–August last year, calling it a "foundation for the historic work we are witnessing now to rebuild the state and to restore democracy."
"The United States honours the sacrifices of those who gave their lives last year," she said.
She noted that this commitment was reaffirmed in a recent telephone conversation between the US secretary of state and the chief adviser of Bangladesh.
Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed attended the ceremony as the special guest.
Chief Justice, other advisers, diplomats, senior officials, and civil society members and journalists were present on the occasion.
Jacobson highlighted more than five decades of Bangladesh-US partnership, praising the deep people-to-people ties and the growing commercial, military, and development cooperation between the two nations.
"Our partnership is strong, built on shared values and mutual interests," she said.
The event, themed around a traditional American "State Fair", celebrated cultural connections and agricultural heritage, with American cotton and Bangladeshi garment excellence symbolically represented through denim outfits worn by attendees.
The US marks 4 July as the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a moment when the American colonies formally broke away from British rule. The day is celebrated with parades, fireworks, and ceremonies across the United States and by its embassies worldwide.
In Dhaka, the celebration served not only as a reminder of the historical roots of American democracy but also as a renewed call for inclusive political engagement and respect for human rights in Bangladesh.
