The embassy warned that although demonstrations are intended to be peaceful, they can quickly turn confrontational or violent
The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security alert for American citizens, urging vigilance as Bangladesh prepares for upcoming elections.
"Bangladesh's Election Commission has announced that the next parliamentary election and a national referendum will be held simultaneously on 12 February 2026. Political rallies and demonstrations are expected to increase in frequency and intensity as the election date approaches," read the notice issued today (15 December).
The embassy warned that although demonstrations are intended to be peaceful, they can quickly turn confrontational or violent.
The notice advised US citizens to stay aware of their surroundings, monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds, and demonstrations.
It also emphasised that safety should be the top priority while traveling or residing in areas of political activity.
