Two more cases filed over Gopalganj violence
The newly filed cases raise the total number to 10
Two more cases have been filed under the Special Powers Act in connection with the recent violence surrounding the National Citizens Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj, bringing the total number of cases to 10.
According to Tungipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Khorshed Alam and Gopalganj Sadar Police Station OC Mir Md Sajedur Rahman, Sub-Inspector Monir Hossain of Tungipara Police Station lodged a case last night, naming 82 individuals and accusing 200 unidentified persons.
Separately, Gopalganj District Jail Jailer Tania Zaman filed a case with Sadar Police Station, naming 160 and accusing another 1,000 unknown individuals over the vandalism at the district jail.
In connection with these latest cases, 11 new arrests have been made.
So far, law enforcement agencies have arrested a total of 322 people in the district, all of whom have been sent to jail via court orders.
Earlier, eight other cases — including four for murder — were filed at Gopalganj, Kashiani, and Kotalipara police stations. In total, 9,846 individuals have been accused across all 10 cases.
At least five people were killed and several others injured in clashes between police and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies over a rally of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj on 16 July.
In the aftermath of the unrest, the Gopalganj district administration imposed a curfew and enforced Section 144 to bring the situation under control. The restrictions were later lifted on 20 July.
