A collision of four vehicles on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Mirsarai's Mithachhara Bazar area left two people dead and 20 others injured in the early hours today (27 February).
The crash caused a major traffic disruption for nearly two hours before police managed to restore order.
The deceased have been identified as Sumon Howladar, 35, son of Latif Howladar from Mushirabad village in Kathalia, Jhalokathi, and Sohag, 35, son of Shah Alam from the Pura Mosque area in West Madarbari, Chattogram.
Among the injured, 10 people were critically hurt and were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.
According to police and fire service officials, the accident occurred when a Nirab Paribahan bus traveling from Chattogram collided with a Shyamoli Paribahan bus. As a result of the collision the Nirab Paribahan bus lost control, crossed the highway divider into the Chattogram-bound lane, and crashed into a speeding covered van.
Meanwhile, the Shyamoli Paribahan bus was hit by another Dhaka-bound covered van, leading to a four-vehicle collision
Sub-Inspector Borhan of Jorarganj Highway Police said two people died on the spot, while the injured were quickly transported to hospitals for medical attention.
"The crash led to a significant traffic jam on the busy highway, halting vehicle movement for almost two hours. Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene, cleared the wreckage, and resumed normal traffic flow," he added.
He also said that legal proceedings regarding the accident are currently underway.
