Two individuals have been arrested in connection with a robbery on an ambulance transporting a corpse in Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar upazila.

Police detained the suspects during early morning raids today (24 May) at various locations within the upazila.

The arrested are Abbas Miah, 32, son of Chan Miah from Kamargaon area in Nasirnagar Sadar, and Sentu Miah, 36, son of Ajdu Miah from Ashurail village in Burishwar Union.

The robbery took place around 1am yesterday (23 May) in the Tilpara area of Nasirnagar.

According to the victims, a group of robbers intercepted an ambulance carrying a deceased man and looted 10 mobile phones and over Tk50,000 in cash from the passengers.

The victim's family has filed a case with the local police station, naming 13 to 14 unidentified individuals as accused. They also claimed the robbers assaulted the corpse with sharp weapons.

However, police stated that the preliminary investigation has not found any evidence to support the claim of assaulting the corpse.

Nasirnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Khairul Alam said police are conducting a thorough investigation into the robbery.

"Two suspects have been arrested. Operations are ongoing to arrest the remaining individuals and recover the looted items," he said.

He further clarified, "The investigation has not found the allegation of assaulting the corpse to be true. It appears the robbers moved the body to check whether any money or valuables were hidden beneath it."

According to the victims, the deceased, Shobdar Ali, a resident of Mukbulpur village in Purbobhag union of Nasirnagar, had died the previous night while undergoing cancer treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. His family members were transporting his body home in the ambulance when the attack occurred.

Around 1am, the robbers blocked the road in Tilpara by placing tree branches on it, forcing the ambulance to stop. They then attacked the passengers, including women, with locally made weapons, and looted their belongings.
