A passenger trawler carrying 39 people capsized in the Meghna River in Noakhali's coastal Hatia upazila this afternoon (31 May), due to strong winds and high waves.

"One person died after being rescued, while six others, including police constable Saiful Islam, remain missing. The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed yet," Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Azmal Huda told The Business Standard.

"The accident occurred around 3:00pm near Dubarchar, adjacent to Karim Bazar area, in the upazila amid stormy weather and rough river conditions. So far, 32 have been rescued. The Coast Guard is currently conducting search and rescue efforts," the OC added.

According to locals, the trawler set off from Bhasan Char around 2:00pm, heading toward Alibazar Ghat in Horni union. On board were four police personnel, a Rohingya patient, Ansar members, and staff from various NGOs.

Approximately 7–8 kilometres from Bhasan Char, near Dubarchar, the vessel encountered rough weather and capsized in the river.

Bhasan Char Police Station OC immediately alerted the Navy and Coast Guard, who were dispatched to conduct rescue operations.

Additional superintendent of police (sadar circle) reached the scene to oversee the ongoing operation, OC Huda said.
