Franchise bus service across capital set for Feb launch with 8 routes under one cluster

Subsequent 8 clusters incorporating other 34 routes to be opened in phases

Chaotic vehicle movement in the bus lanes of the Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Uttara on Saturday. The 20.5km route between Dhaka airport and Gazipur is expected to enter full operation in December 2025. The dedicated bus lanes have reduced space for other lanes already causing traffic woes, and is feared to make congestion worse when only BRT buses will be allowed to use the lanes. Jamuna Railway Bridge to open in late January

Vehicles from Uttara move at a snail’s pace near the Dhaka airport close to the exit point of Gazipur BRT. Several construction projects including BRT and metro rail have narrowed the road at this point creating bottlenecks. Now, the usually fast traffic has become a commuting nightmare with delays running for over 30 minutes some days. The photo was taken recently. Photo: Syed Zakir Hossain
