Deadline to update vehicle documents without penalty extended to 28 February

The Road Transport and Highways Division has extended the deadline to update vehicle fitness certificates, tax tokens, route permits, and drivers' licenses without penalty until 28 February.

In a circular issued yesterday (26 January), the division announced that vehicle owners and drivers can update expired documents without penalties until the new deadline.

The circular stated that all types of vehicle owners can renew their documents. 
Earlier, on 3 December, a similar circular had set the deadline for updating these documents without penalties as 31 December.

An official from the Road Transport and Highways Division told The Business Standard that a significant number of vehicles still lack updated fitness certificates, tax tokens, and route permits for two main reasons: some vehicles are no longer roadworthy and would fail fitness tests, while some owners have become accustomed to bypassing regulations. Furthermore, many drivers have yet to renew their licenses.

The official explained that the government aims to enhance revenue collection through this initiative while bringing all vehicles and drivers into compliance with regulations. 

He also emphasised that vehicles without valid or updated fitness certificates would not be allowed on the roads, as the lack of vehicle fitness is a major factor contributing to road accidents.
